How the Inflation Calculator Works

This inflation calculator converts an amount of US dollars from one year into another using the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), the measure published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Choose the amount and the two years: the tool divides the index value of the target year by the index value of the starting year and multiplies your amount by that factor. You get what is left of that amount's purchasing power, the purchasing-power loss in percent, the equivalent amount at today's prices, and the average annual rate — the compound rate that would produce the same change across the whole period. Annual averages are used for 1913 to 2025; for 2026 the latest published month (September 2026) is used, so the current-year figure is a point-in-time index rather than a yearly average. The CPI tracks an average basket of goods and services for urban households, so the result is a purchasing-power estimate: individual prices such as rent, food or electronics can move very differently. Everything is calculated in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the table shows how the amount develops at regular intervals between the two years.
